Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, employed by the government of Israel as the chief rabbi of Safed, demanded the state lynch the children of a gunman who recently attacked an ultranationalist Jerusalem yeshiva (a religious school).
His comments were the latest in a long series of bigoted, violent, and inciting comments by Israeli rabbis. In 2006, for example, Rabbi David Batzri raged against a planned joint Arab-Jewish school: "the establishment of such a school is a despicable and sinful act. An Arab cannot contaminate what is pure. It is forbidden to blend darkness and light. The nation of Israel is pure and the Arabs are a nation of donkeys.
